Weaving structure: Plain weave, crackle weave
The Northmen, better known as the Vikings, were a wild, seafaring people. They were fierce conquerors, but were also traders, and roamed the then known world in 800 to 1000 BC.
In this piece, the body stands firm against the stormy wind and water, while his wrap blows freely around him. The blues and greens of the background represent the winds and sea waters, and the drops blow across him.
The inspiration came from the copy of the brass cloak pin. The original one was found in the only proven Viking settlement in the New World, in Newfoundland. I often wonder about that pin, and who grieved for the loss of it in that lone outpost of Viking civilization. The title comes from an old Anglican prayer asking for protection against the sea raiders.
