Inspired by a Cheyenne war shirt, I substituted a woven fabric for the deerskin, and the summer and winter weaving structure copies the beading, but using yarn instead. A brass gorget and brass snuff can lids (tinklers) add to the movement and rhythm. Small woven shields on the bottom mirror the painted shield behind the costume.
Materials include the brass pieces, pearl cotton, wool, and rayon. Acrylic paint adds more color and dimension. The weaving structure is called Summer & Winter (on opposites).
There is real joy in this warrior’s dance: a feeling of the freedom and openness of our western plains.
